How Can abdominal Cramps Along With Diarrhea Be Treated?

I have been on Nitrofurantoin Mono/macro bid 100mg for at least 10 years. I m 67 years old. I have interstitial cystitis and recurring UTIs. The medication has kept this under control. As of the 1st of the year my employer changed Rx companies and they are requesting a new prior authorization before it will be filled. I have been out since Wed night. I have contacted my physicians office several times this week and they still haven t completed my paperwork. Now I m experiencing cramping, diarrhea, my stool has mucus in it and some blood. Is it safe to wait for the doctors office to open on Monday morning? Is what I m experiencing a side effect of stopping the drug or just a intestinal bug? Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated.

As of now, you can take bowel soothing agents like carminative for symptomatic relief.

You can also take antacids like Pantoprazole or Omeprazole for symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
